—Leonide Moguy to Candie, Django Unchained |
Leonide "Leo" Moguy was Calvin Candie's lawyer. He was always seen travelling with Monsieur Candie to ensure that he would be safe from legal issues. He is shown to be an acknowledging character throughout the film, being quiet but sly as well. He claims to have been raised to serve Calvin Candie by way of legal issues ever since he was born. Given that he had originally been a clerk to Calvin's grandfather, who later paid his way through law school, this claim may very likely be figuratively accurate.
He seems to be in wholehearted agreement with Monsieur Candie in every single one of his wild claims and strange anecdotes. He also treats black people with disrespect. The only slave he shows some admiration for is Big Fred, claiming he is "worth every penny" due to his excellent pugilist skills.
Leonide Moguy was also the one who appointed Candie in signing the sale and ownership papers to Dr. King Schultz after he purchases Broomhilda.
When Candyland was attacked, Moguy attempted to flee the battle, showing his loyalty to Calvin only went so far and a sense of self-preservation overrode it. His retreat was foiled when he got shot and fell to the ground yelling. He was shot several more times. It was later revealed that the gunshots proved fatal.
